Standard Operating Procedure Checklist

Use this before you publish any SOP so it is actually usable.

Checklist steps

  1. Define the purpose and scope

    One process, clearly bounded.

  2. Name the process owner

One accountable person, not a team.

  3. Write the steps in order

One action per step, plain language, active voice.

  4. Add tools, inputs and outputs

What is needed and what good looks like.

  5. Note risks and exceptions

What to do when things go wrong.

  6. Test with someone who has never done it

If they get stuck, the SOP is wrong.

  7. Set version, approver and review date

    Review at least annually.
